Luke Tweedy of Flat Black Studios DJ’ed at Camp Dirtbag, and pulled out “Tropical Hot Dog Night” by Captain Beefheart, which I hadn’t heard for a very long time, that sounded completely different to me.
What made the difference? Arthur Russell. This is a song Arthur Russell would have loved, that he would have put his head right in the speaker for to try and decode the beat.
I immediately pulled it into Ableton Live to consider doing an edit to play out, or even sample it but after playing with it a bit, I decided that A) it sounded wrong at any tempo other than the original 100BPM and B) it was pretty much perfect as is.
