There’s a frisbee golf course at the edge of the Iowa River on the Iowa City side that wanders into the woods at the water’s edge. This is a little shallow backwater. It was full of tadpoles.

When I did the OS X build for PaulStretch, it became the most popular and enduring blog post I’ve ever done.

Paulstretch has kind of a funky user interface, but the way it sounds, and the sound variations it is capable of are fantastic. And it’s free. It also can take a 3 minute song and turn it into a week-long ambient drone. The dude who wrote it (Nasca Octavian Paul) shows up on the web every 5 years ago and drops a piece of interesting software, then disappears again. He’s never returned my e-mails, and I’ve maintained the OS X port!

Anyway, this is Paulstretch operating on “Mal Hombre” by the legendary Lydia Mendoza
Download audio file (LydiaMendoza-MalHombre-PaulStretched.mp3)
http://www.cornwarning.com/chaircrusher/LydiaMendoza-MalHombre-PaulStretched.mp3

The original. I should mention that Lydia Mendoza is absolutely fantastic. A pioneer of Norteño music, the popular music of Mexican-Americans in the United States, she plays that music kind of like what’s playing in Mexican Restaurants, only she’s as fearless a singer as Aretha Franklin. She can bring me to tears, and I don’t even know Spanish.
It is basically the UK version of “Cold Case” but is a lot less gimmicky and a lot more hard-boiled. It’s not quite Prime Suspect but it’s rather good.

I usually watch TV and pay attention mostly to whether I enjoy it, without a lot of deep interest in the craft of how it was made. But I watched the first 2 minutes of the Episode Deathwatch and the sound was so badass I backed up and played it again. Every detail of how this is put together — the slamming of doors, the sliding of the cabinet between the waiting room and the gallows room, the occasional sub-bass drop added for drama, and most of all, the faint, subliminal bird calls in the background.

I heard this and immediately thought ‘there’s an entire track in those samples!’

<g:plusone href="http://music.cornwarning.com/2010/05/08/i-beat-the-internet/" size="standard" count="true"></g:plusone>

Since going to my sister’s wedding (a week ago today) I have yet to ‘catch up’ on all the blog feeds & such I have in Google Reader. And this morning I just started marking ‘all read’ entire categories.

I feel like I no longer have the appetite to ‘keep up.’ Of course, the Internet is a giant time-sink, and makes newspapers (which were derided as ‘fish-wrap’ back in the day) look like engraved stone tablets by comparison.

It’s all so ephemeral. When I was going to sleep last night, I was thinking about this, and also about quantum physics (and no I’m by no means deep) and all the fizzing and nattering on the Internet made me think of virtual particles in a vacuum, that keep popping into existence in particle/anti-particle pairs. They only exist for the tiniest moment before annihilating each other.

Now unlike protons and anti-protons, all this gabbling on the net actually tries to mean something, and insofar as the Internet is the public commons for this age, and is where everyone carries on political discourse, it’s important.

But even as I have some desire that people pay attention to ME, out of vanity or whatever, do I have any particular obligation to pay attention to the Internet? Any more, I think I like listening to NPR better — no commercials (well …) and precisely one person at a time is talking to me.

Of course, you can’t beat Björk the bear shaking her cub out of a tree.

It’s worth going to the site for the demo reel that plays automatically. It’s structured as a movie trailer, but since it packs in “trailer moments” from something like 50 short films, it makes your head reel to construct a mental model of the non-existent movie it promotes.

And their individual films are pretty great too. This one tells a story that needs no words:
This is apparently a miniature Twitter phenomenon, so I’m jumping on a bandwagon yet again. Oh well…

Anyway, I went looking for some place to buy the music, and it turns out Hit Thing has re-issued it, so I ordered it. In the meantime I found it on the Internets. Below is my ‘refix version’ — I tweaked the EQ and compression for modern DJ’ing, and warped it to steady 116 BPM. The original was a fairly constant 114, but I think there are a couple of clumsy tape edits or stretches in it to throw it off here and there.

The track below is entirely comprised of Ableton Live time stretching abuse of various sorts….

This is a collection of tracks that was supposed to come out on another label that closed up shop. I offered to do a Creative Commons release for Lackluster. He located the masters (on backups, and backups of backups!) and I mastered them.

Lackluster has been one of the most well regarded artists in the genre known (controversially) as IDM. With a discography going back 10 years, he has released music on Merck, Monotonik, deFocus and many others.

Artillery 2 was there first, but Exile’s work has it’s own brand of craziness and creative possibilities stemming from the fact that it is a Reaktor Ensemble. The Reaktor-ness comes into play because you can create random presets, morph between two presets, or go in and tweak up exactly the sort of combination of effects you want to have on hand. This track is based on exploring the possiblities of Finger.

Playing a drum loop in battery and processing through The Finger, and recording the output.

Once I’d recorded the Finger’s output, playing that recording back thru The Finger, further messing things up.

Adding several recordings of The Finger’s output to a Live track, and using the legato trigger mode to allow me to flip quickly between the different recordings.

Once I’d added a more straghtforward drum track and synth sound (from the Dave Smith Mopho), jam out an arrangement live, which also includes drum patterns being run thru the Finger (with the Finger being manipulated with recorded MIDI clips).

The result is kind of messed up, but fun.

UPDATE: I downloaded this file and put it on my site here.
Why should you care? It’s one of the very few early 60s Exotica records that’s really good. Let’s leave aside for now how offensive to some Muslims calling your night club combo “His Mecca Four.” These guys play the living shit out of this music, which sounds very much like Egyptian or Turkish popular music of the early 60s, except it’s all instrumental. And for all its ‘authenticity’ — I’m no musicologist after all — it’s mostly original compositions.

And for the samplers amongst you there are some smoking Durbeck breaks.

Top it off with the cover (mind you NONE of the people in this group are Arab) of a guy on a camel. This came out right after Lawrence of Arabia, and no doubt sought to capitalize on that movie’s popularity.

<g:plusone href="http://music.cornwarning.com/2009/06/06/djing-in-live-limiters-are-not-the-answer/" size="standard" count="true"></g:plusone>

This is a common ‘helpful tip’ about playing live or DJ’ing with Ableton Live — ‘put a limiter on the main output bus.’

After recording a set last night (which you’ll hear about when I get approval from one artist to use a track) I have spent some time rendering, tweaking, and then re-rendering a mix, because of leveling moves I made in the heat of the moment. It’s really hard unless you have some sort of giant external meter to watch to keep things properly leveled.

Several times during the mix I brought tracks up to the point they were pegging the limiter giving you that dreaded ‘solid ingot’ waveform. I’m going to take the limiter out of my standard setup and resolve to watch the meters better, and use my ears. If you clip the main output in Live a little bit it does a fairly good job of soft-limiting to keep from going into digital clipping. But it’s better that you LISTEN to what you’re doing and be conservative than to use the limiter as a crutch.

The problem isn’t that it sounds ‘bad’ — it sounds OK. But it doesn’t sound great, because you lose all dynamics. If you’re DJing, everything you play has already been mastered and limited within an inch of it’s life, to limit it more is to second guess the mastering engineers, using much less sophisticated tools.

As for the general philosophical idea of DJing in Live — I love playing vinyl, but especially when it comes to making a studio mix, I like the flexibility that Live gives you, and freedom from cuing and beatmatching as primary concerns. When I do one of my studio mixes, my concern is to showcase the stuff I’ve recently acquired in a way that is meaningful musically to me, not show off my skills.

I go through a lot of tracks to find the ones that speak to the mood I’m going for, and pre-sequence them, usually in order of tempo. I actually do record the actual mix in real time — I’m triggering and fading and EQing live. But I’m not above going back and correcting levels. Or in the mix I just did, loop the end of one track to make the transition to the next more graceful.

My goal is to get to where I don’t have to tweak after the fact, and every time I record a set I get closer. When I listen to the first mixes I did with Live a couple years ago they make me cringe. I want to be able to get in front of a crowd and use the flexibility of Live to make it sound great and move a crowd. Getting away from using the mouse and staring at the screen can make a big difference. The APC40 is nice in that way, but actually the mappings I have for the XSession Pro are a more complete mouse-eliminator.

I spent a bit of time this morning trying to whip my laptop into shape for a Ableton DJ set, and then I figured ‘fuck it.’ I’m not the best DJ in the world but I have good records. Plus it’s a benefit for the local AIDS hospice, so it’s not a hardcore dance music audience.

So I started going through my record box, and my shelves and I realized that I had absolutely fantastic records, and a lot of fun disco in the original pressings, so screw the computer, this time.

I do feel like I also enjoy the Ableton Live route — I can be more creative with effects and it frees me from the mechanics of beatmatching and cuing. But any time I get to play actual records any more is special!
